Mental Health Survey Reports 2 Million Suicide Plans Among Adult American Population

The L.A. Times Health section delivered an alarming report on findings from the survey by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration this week.

According to the survey conducted with 46,190 Americans in 2008, 8.3 million people ages 18 and over had serious thoughts of suicide in the previous year. Of those 8+ million, an estimated 2.3 million adults made a suicide plan for carrying out their destructive thoughts. Although still a figure in the millions, only about half of the people with a plan actually attempt suicide.

Age and substance abuse also played a factor in suicide risk. Individuals between the ages of 18 and 25 experienced suicidal thoughts more often; and substance abuse issues were related to an increased risk to consider, plan, or attempt suicide. These figures deliver a clear and pressing message that suspected suicidal behavior should always be taken seriously. There are current resources in place for individuals struggling with suicidal thoughts and behaviors, primarily the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline which operates a network of 140 crisis centers around the country. However this type of intervention requires action, highlighting the need to be perceptive and responsive to suicidal indications or behaviors among friends, family, and the community at large.

There are also preventative resources that serve to eliminate risks of suicide before they develop. These include stress management counseling, therapy for low self esteem issues, family and marital counseling, and general sessions with a licensed counselor. For individuals who are already experiencing thoughts of suicide, specialized counselors can provide sessions specifically designed to reduce and eradicate these suicidal thoughts. There are more than 15 counselors listed on Feel Good Austin with a specialization in suicide thinking and behavior; view all of these counselors now by clicking here
